Better Books=Better Business
I say this all the time, however, when I say it, I’m convinced that it may mean something to me, but maybe not to the business owners, I hope to reach.
You can have a thriving business, but without good financial records it will not matter. I’ve had tax clients that made literally over ½ million dollars in one year and have no business as at all the next year. It’s hard to imagine right? When you’re working, grinding hard every day you will see money coming in, but your focus will always be the crisis, the task, situation, problem, or deal in front of you. Building a business is a 25/10 job! With only 24 hours and 7 days a week, to build you will find yourself defying odds, just to get things done. So making more money or less money by year end is a natural thing. I’ve rarely prepared a tax return for an entrepreneur that didn’t have bookkeeping who wasn’t surprised by their totals. Being surprised at the money your company made or didn’t make isn’t good business!
So when I say #DoBusinessBetter, I’m saying, know your numbers!
- Create and implement systems for invoicing, receiving, distributing your funds as well as reconciling credit cards and bank accounts monthly.
- Separate funds – don’t have your personal funds with your business funds
- Get and use separate credit cards that are used for business purposes only
- Review your finances each month! You cannot fix, alter, change, correct or improve anything at year end.
- Monitor Cash Flow –this goes with #4, you cannot monitor what you do not know
- Systems for handling business protect everyone!
You cannot conduct a successful business without procedures, systems, checks and balances!
