As I always say, “I can’t make this stuff up.” I can’t. Each year, I review, redo tax returns that were done by friends of a friend, someone with good intentions who has done his or her taxes for years, always gets a ‘good refund’ and so the friend will give them a try. Things go wrong and the next year, I’m redoing the return, correcting mistakes and trying to help the tax payer get out the trouble that his or her non-professional friend got him or her in. Simply put, a little knowledge is dangerous. Tax codes, breaks, cut-offs aren’t simple. Those who perform this operation annually, study, review and take care of just how he or she prepares your return. There are rules that can be written and there are rules, thought processes that we know and understand.
The job market has made a shift. The opportunities to be in business for yourself and not by yourself have doubled. It is known as the “gig effect” where people are obtaining gigs, that allow them to work flexible hours and earn money as a self-employed person. While most people understand or have at least heard about the possible deductions, many get into trouble because again, they have ‘a little knowledge.’ Don’t make those mistakes!
