TAX TIME/TIPS/THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW!
FIRST DAY OF ACCEPTING TAX RETURNS IS JANUARY 27th, 2020
- Taxes are not meant to be performed by you, the tax preparer – Please don’t belittle the knowledge, the hours spent preparing and understanding the diverse tax laws. To do so would be rude. DIY (Do-It-Yourself) is long gone. The laws have changed and you should not take those changes for granted.
- You cannot use information from last year (2018) with this year (2019) return
- Wait for your W-2 or 1099 to come in BEFORE preparing your return, it will save you time, misfiling and misinformation. I know a lot of companies will use the last check but don’t do it. I’ve seen this backfire.
- WARNING! DON’T ASSUME REFUNDS WILL COME WHEN THEY SHOULD – Last year I saw sooooooooooooo many refunds that were delayed for NO REASON AT ALL! Please do yourself a favor and do not wait or make plans for your refund, they were not released fast last year and they will not be released swiftly this year either.
- Audits are done randomly but certain drastic changes in your tax preparation can bring attention to your return and trigger it to be audited. So if your tax-preparer request a former return, grant the request
- IF you have received letters from the IRS, unanswered letters will result in the IRS escalating your case!
- THE IRS WILL NEVER EVER NEVER EVER CALL YOU! Don’t fall for it!
- THE IRS WILL NOT EMAIL YOU!
- Do not play with your tax returns, file them accurately. Filing one way and then doing amendments to the filing can trigger audits and result in large penalties!
Tax laws have changed so stop trying to do it yourself!
